Among the stranger things I’ve seen involving Malaysia: Snoop Dogg wearing a Cardiff City jersey with Malaysia1 emblazoned over it making a tribute vid to Ian Neale, a record-breaking vegetation grower, while standing in front of a lush background of Snoop’s favorite thang.

1 Why does the Cardiff City jersey say ‘Malaysia’? The Championship football club is chaired — but not actually owned as many believe — by one of ours, Datuk Chan Tien Ghee. The real owner is none other than Tan Sri2 Vincent Tan, whose Berjaya Corporation controls vast swaths of the country as well as holds the Malaysian license for franchise such as Starbucks, Kenny Rogers, and other super-big names.2 Of Datukships and Tan Sri titles: ‘Datuk’ is a state or federally awarded title probably equivalent to the British ‘Sir’. ‘Tan Sri’ is one league above it, second only to the rank of ‘Tun’, which as I understand it is limited to 35 living titleholders. I can’t think of any parallels among European styles, as Tan Sri and Tun are nonhereditary (though one could argue they could be Baronetcies, in that case.)
